Electricity: The Historic Energy Crisis and the Path to a Comprehensive Solution

Goodness me, the state of this country.
Has it not been enough for the grief-stricken Sudanese people to have endured your conflict, which has hung over their heads for more than three years? Has it not been enough for the people to have suffered the destruction of their homes, the devastation of their infrastructure, death, displacement and hunger?
How long will this corruption continue, whilst the war rages on and you carry out your corrupt practices openly, day after day, deceiving the people into believing that you are doing the right thing?
Is it not enough for the people of the East, the sons of the Red Sea, what you have already done to them, O thieving pirates?
I used to be in charge of energy and electricity, and I counted nine major \u201cscandals\u201d in the electricity sector, all caused by corruption and stupidity, four of which were in the Red Sea region. And yesterday, in that very same place, a new \u2018stake\u2019 reared its ugly, distorted and suspicious head.
The Ministry of Energy\/Thermal Power Generation Company has contracted a small, obscure firm called Nawawi, named after a Sufi sheikh from the city of Atbara. I saw this contract as very similar to the contract for the Zainab barge \u2013 \u201cthe Turkish barge\u201d \u2013 which is still currently operating in Port Sudan. In my view, this Turkish barge is one of the nine stumbling blocks that have paralysed the electricity sector. According to what the journalist Bakash reported from an interview he conducted with the company\u2019s owner, he stated the following:
A 34-page contract was signed between the Thermal Power Generation Company (Ministry of Energy) and Nawawi.
The agreement was signed on 15 March 2026. The details of the contract have not been made public and the company has refused to disclose them. However, it did disclose the following:
The price per kilowatt-hour is 4.9 cents. .
The monthly bill paid by the government following the vessels\u2019 entry into service amounts to $3.5 million per month. Nawawi is the company that owns the two barges, along with other partners from Yemen, as stated by its owner; furthermore, the government bears the cost of fuel and pays the rental fees to the Maritime Ports Authority for the generation of 100 megawatts.There are also provisions for other construction works included in the contract. End of quote.
And I very much doubt that Nawawi owns a yacht worth approximately $18 million.
Goodness me, the state of this country\u2026.
The previous vessel, owned by the Turkish company Zainab, is still in operation under that same bizarre contract, and the government pays more than $3.5 million a month \u2013 including fuel and port charges \u2013 from the money of the long-suffering people.
Nawawi\u2019s new vessel will not be able to enter service before the end of October, i.e. after the end of the current summer season, as there are engineering requirements for the installation and construction of the connection, transmission and transformer equipment.
Once they are operational, the government will also pay $3.5 million \u2013 which works out at over $7 million a month for the two vessels. May God help us.
Is this period \u2013 and the years that preceded it, which were squandered in vain and corruption \u2013 sufficient to complete the Siemens turbine project at the Kalaniib power station?
Who is preventing the completion of the Kalaniib station? Who is with them? And who is behind them?
Are Simi and its owner, the Turkish fabric manufacturer Oktay, still the same contractors responsible for the installation of both the Kalaniib and Qari stations?
Are we to believe you, just as you tried to deceive us before with the $11 million project to restore and maintain the Shambat Bridge? And when the stench of corruption began to spread, you were quick to scrap the project entirely.
And are we to believe you when you signed an agreement with Al-Asjad Company and the Bank of Sudan in the presence of senior state officials and a high-ranking general in the Sudanese Navy? Yet as soon as other foul odours began to emerge, you rushed \u2013 without a shred of shame \u2013 to cancel both the agreement and the project?
And what\u2019s the latest on the fuel import companies and the \u201830-company lobby\u2019?
Can we still trust you, after all this, regarding the Barja Nawawi Agreement?
And would any sensible person agree to pay $7 million a month for the two warships out of the public purse, whilst the people are currently enduring a historic tragedy the like of which God has never before brought upon this country?.
Would it not make sense to spend this money, effort and time on completing the Siemens turbines at the Qari and Kalaniib power stations, which would provide a radical solution to both the electricity crisis and corruption, rather than resorting to these temporary and costly stopgap measures?
Would it not be sensible and prudent to channel resources towards repairing the thermal power stations destroyed by the war? Did the current minister not state a month ago that total thermal power generation stands at 10%, the same as before the war?
Wouldn\u2019t it make more sense to maintain the equipment on the power interconnector with Ethiopia and bring in 200 megawatts instead of these costly and dubious power stations?
Would it not be sensible to set aside a small portion of those exorbitant funds and a little time to complete the \u201cFourth Pillar\u201d of the Eastern Electricity Project, so that the oppressed people of the East might enjoy even the minimal services they deserve? What sort of government is this? Indeed, what sort of country is this, if it even exists?!
In conclusion, I can say with certainty that the thieving pirates who are squandering public money on the costs of the warship are the very same people who are hindering the completion of the Siemens turbine project at the Kalaniib and Qari 3 power stations, as well as the Eastern Electricity Project.
For your information, below is a brief overview of the Klaniib station:
In December 2016, under Minister Osama Abdullah Al-Kouz, the Ministry of Irrigation, Water Resources and Electricity signed a contract with the German company Siemens to construct two power stations in the villages of (3 turbines) and Kalanayib (2 turbines), all with a total generating capacity of 950 megawatts (5 \u00d7 187 megawatts), with future plans to increase this to 1,270 megawatts using a combined cycle system.
\u2060In August 2024, the Minister for Energy and the Minister for Finance signed a contract with the National Energy and Engineering Company (a subsidiary of the Military Industrialisation Organisation) to complete the Kalanaib electricity project, in the presence of Lieutenant General Ibrahim Jaber.
In June 2025, Prime Minister Kamel Idris visited the Kalanaib power station (and congratulated the staff on their great achievement), whilst the Director of Electricity stated that the project was 45%\u061c complete (praise be to God).
In December 2025, the Minister for Energy visited the Kalanayib power station site, where he stated that the civil engineering works had been completed, and instructed that all work be finished within eight months (i.e. around this time).
These are milestones in the life of the Qari and Kalanaib power station project. Taking the latter as an example, the period from the signing of the contract in 2016 to the present day in 2026 amounts to exactly ten years, during which the project has not been fully completed.
No to war.
No to corruption.
